I was going through the Mid-Day Metro Mulund edition yesterday. There was this interesting article about Mulundkars being media-shy. Mulundkars were termed as an anomaly. Here is my perspective on this....For nearly one and a half years now, I have been in touch with various reporters from various newspapers and news channels. I have provided them with input on the irregularities with MSEB, BMC, MMRDA, etc. Most of the reporters have been very co-operative and have given a proper ear to all our concerns. However, we need to understand one thing...Journalism is no longer about covering news. It is all about covering stories....Stories that give your news channels better TRP ratings and stories that sell your papers more.

Last year, during the monsoons, I had taken photographs of the road where I have stayed since birth, R.R.T. Road. The photographs clearly showed layers of muck and slime and numerous potholes. I emailed these snaps to a reporter from Mulund Plus (Mulund supplement of Times of India) and invited her over to get a first-hand experience of these roads. She did drop in and took my views on this issue. Just before leaving, I was surprised by the statement she made. "Why is that you are the only one who is complaining from this area?", she asked. Point to be noted is that she felt that a citizen who is asking a question, is, in fact, complaning! I had to be outright rude and tell her that if voicing your concerns is called complaining, then I am glad that I am the only one complaining as it shows that I am awake.

The point I am trying to highlight is that if reporters and journalists treat concerned citizens so shabbily, WHY will a citizen come forward to the media? I am not insinuating that all the reporters are the same. However, this Mulund Plus incident is case in point.

The reporters also need to understand that what concerns citizens, who normally speak anonymously, are two points - PUBLIC RIDICULE and SECURITY.When I filed three RTI petitions, I had my family members saying all kinds of things. They feel that I am a credit-hog and they feel I am a weirdo. Most of them feel that there is no point in figthing against the Government as the popular opinion is that we cannot win. To them, I say, If you fight, you may sometimes lose. If you do'nt fight, you've already lost.

I stay on the most arterial road of Mulund which is occupied more by hawkers than there are residents. There have been instances where our security is at stake when we go fight against such people. The hawkers issue is a case in point. I stay with my wife and mother. When we come in the limelight because of these stories, we have been threatened in the past. Who will come and protect our families?

I had a friend who passed away in October last year. He died in a gruesome accident, which is largely attributed to MMRDA negligence. I emailed ALL leading newspapers and news channels. Sadly, only ONE newspaper deemed it necessary to cover this incident. After all, would the death of ONE man have increased the sales of the newspapers and increased TRP ratings of their channels? I even came out with a chain email, to which I received replies from ALL OVER THE WORLD, which were subsequently forwarded to many newschannels. Sadly, it did not make an IOTA of difference to them. Is this not an anomaly?

There is one more factor which is a large contributor to this attitude. We need to acknowledge that there is a major NORTH-SOUTH and an EAST-WEST divide which exists in media coverage of events occuring inMumbai. During the recent downpours, NOT A SINGLE channel covered the central suburbs beyond Sion whereas just about every square inch of the western suburbs and south Mumbai was covered in the media's coverage. Can any one person give some kind of a justification to this divide? Why will a normal citizen want to come forward when we know that we are talking to the biased media?

I think some introspection needs to be carried out on behalf of the media houses, before they term the attitude of Mulundkars as anomolous.

RIGHT TO INFORMATION PETITION

In response to one of the posts from a resident staying near Deep Mandir about power problems, I want to announce that I am filing a RTI Petition against MSEB.

Just to highlight one more incident about MSEB, I usually receive one in every three bills generated by them. It is a regular routine in my office to go to the MSEB office in Mulund (E) and collect a copy and then stand in a line to make a payment.

Now, this month, I have received a bill for an amount of TWO months, including for a bill for which I have made a payment by cheque. Today morning, when my man went to the MSEB office in Mulund (E) to get the bill rectified, he was told "The concerned person who handles the Sarvodaya Nagar devision has not come. You please come back tomorrow." He had the audacity to point out to a group of 5-6 people standing there and say that they were also waiting for that person. DISGUSTING, MR. PRADEEP NICHANT!! WAKE UP!!!

I will just add that if there are some more Mulundiites who are awake and wish to be heard, please call me on 9892644777. Maybe your feedback will help in the RTI Petition.

Let us make a difference before it is too late.

Save our Mulund

Hi all,

It has been a long time since I have made a post. My due apologies about that.

As all of us have been watching the news and are aware about the RTI Act. There are certain volunteers based in Mumbai who are willing to come across and train citizen groups numbering 20 and above. We are aware that this Act is very empowering to the common man, however, we should be aware of how to use it.

Now that the government has given some powers to the common citizen, it is time we came forward and made use of this act to good effect.

All those of you who are interested in meeting up and getting more information about the RTI Act and how to use it can call me on 9892644777.

Regards,

Save our Mulund

Dear All,

I have been receiving a very good response from a lot of people and I want to thank all of you for the same.

There was a suggestion to file a free petition from the site http://petitiononline.com . I have been through the site and am in the process of studying it and putting up a petition.

A lot of NRI Mulundiites have responded to my blog, which is a very heartening sign. It would be appreciated if all of you could pass on the word to all your relatives staying in Mulund and make them post some complaints and their views on the BMC working in Mulund. This would help a lot.

Manav Jyot, an established NGO in Mulund has also responded and I intend getting in touch with them. I am sure that in co-ordination with them, we will be able to make a difference in a bigger way.

So I look forward to a bigger response from you.

Signature Campaign Update

With reference to my previous posting about a signature campaign against the MSEB, I am pleased to inform you that I am getting an overwhelming response.

I just wanted to inform you that we are still in the process of drafting a memorandum with proper legalities so as to avoid future problems.

This file will be available for download from tomorrow onwards. You can download it, take a print and gather as many signatures as possible. In a subsequent post, you will be notified about the dates when the memorandum will be submitted. You can either courier them to me or you can personally be a part of the delegation which will present the memorandum.

We have also informed the Press about our intentions and they have promised us complete support.

Once again, thank you all very much.

SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN AGAINST M.S.E.B.

Due to a major voltage fluctuation in certain areas of Mulund (W), including R.R.T. Road, Zaver Road, etc., this morning at approximately 7.30 AM, a lot of consumers have lost a lot of expensive electrical appliances.

I, personally have lost one fridge, four tubelights, one 21" color t.v. and one entire home theatre system. My neighbours have a charred 29" color t.v. as a gift from M.S.E.B. Someone else has lost fans. Someone saw smoke rise from electrical appliances, the smell of which still lingers in the house.

When we spoke to M.S.E.B. officials, at first, as usual the line was perpetually busy. Later we learnt that some transformer at Shiv Ganga had burnt down due to a sudden surge in voltage.

We can understand human errors but it has repeatedly been brought M.S.E.B.'s notice that there is such an incident waiting to happen as the current transformer and cables are grossly overloaded. M.S.E.B. has refused to do anything about it and see what has happened today.

I intend putting up a signature campaign from tomorrow onwards for a period of at least 3 days. We request you to actively come forward and endorse this letter. It will later on be submitted to Mr. Pradeep Nichant from M.S.E.B.

It is our endeavour to have this situation rectified permanently. Please help us help you.

Please email me on
savemulund@gmail.com in case you wish to get in touch with me personally.

Save our Mulund

SHAME! SHAME!! SHAME!!!

My opinions and photographs have been appearing regularly in Mid-Day Metro. This has prompted quite a few people, including my relatives to say that I have opened an office exclusively for this puprose. My reply to them is as under:

It is because of your generation's "LET GO" attitude that our suburb, city, state and country has gone to the dogs. Corruption is rampant and anti-social elements rule the roost. All this has reached such a crescendo simply because my previous generation chose to be mute spectators.

Now, today, when I and my generation are choosing to be pro-active about these issues, people with such an attitude are the reason that authorities can get away with such wrong-doings.

Incidentally, these people are the very ones who complain, rave and rant about the government not doing anything, frequent load shedding, corruption, etc. I would want to tell them clearly that if you do not have a remedy to a sickness or are unwilling to go to a doctor for medicines, QUIT COMPLAINING. There is a saying "Either lead or follow or get out of the way!" Try not to get in the way of people who are working with selfless motives so that EVERYONE stands to benefit at the end of the day.

I am also aware that people feel I am doing all this for publicity. To these people I want to say that this is a free country. I cannot control anybody's thoughts or actions but I can certainly let my actions speak for themselves.

Toda, I have a choice between being a mute spectator like some elite personalities of my previous generation or to speak up against what I feel is wrong and at least try to correct it. When I look at myself in the mirror, I know I can look at myself with a clean conscience.

Unlike my predecessors, I choose to be vocal about my opinions. I am at least not sitting idle at home and complaining, raving and ranting about the wrongs of the society. I am being constructive.
